Full Mouth ReconstructionFull mouth reconstruction or restoration is done for many reasons, such as the following: loss of teeth, trauma, fractured teeth, tooth grinding (in this case, for TMJ treatment), acid erosion, and uneven bite alignment.

Procedures used in full mouth reconstruction or restoration treatment are as follows:

Review of patient history – The patient’s full dental history has to be taken into account so the restoration treatment can be custom built.

Prophylactic teeth cleaning – Before anything else, the remaining healthy teeth should be cleaned in preparation for further steps.

Gum tissue /disease intervention – infected gums are given treatment, also in preparation for further steps

Temporary restorations – This is done when intermediate steps are needed for further restoration. This can include temporary fillings, pulpotomy, or pulpectomy for root canal surgery.

Dental treatments – any of the following can be used for proper restoration: porcelain veneers, dental crowns, dental implants, bridges, tooth bonding, and colored fillings.

Surgery – Once the patient is ready, surgery to improve the bite alignment and for other mouth reconstruction procedures will be scheduled. This includes root canal surgery and bone grafts. Later on, dental implants and corrective surgery for misaligned of fractured teeth can be done.

The full process of treatment can take up to a year or more, depending on how extensive the restoration will be.

But why do it?
For some, full mouth reconstruction can literally help a patient’s self-esteem or psychological state, qualifying it as cosmetic dentistry. However, in other cases, mouth restoration is a measure against rampant tooth decay and gum disease. Neuromuscular dentistry is also a possible reason, as uneven teeth caused by teeth grinding, and TMJ (temporomandibular) disorders can cause muscle and nerve pain that can only be treated properly once the bite alignment is addressed and corrected.

Full mouth reconstruction combines cosmetic, general, and surgical dentistry to give a patient not only a smile makeover, but a total dental (and sometimes neuromuscular) solution as well.
